Data cabling in Hatfield.

Hatfield is three towns wearing one name: a large modern business park on the former aerodrome, a substantial university and student-accommodation quarter, and Old Hatfield with its listed and period stock. We work in all three, and the method changes completely between them.

Local context

Three building types, one postcode.

  1. Hatfield Business ParkModern large-floorplate offices and distribution units on the former aerodrome site. Generous ceiling voids, accessible containment and conventional Cat6A specifications — but floorplates wide enough that the distance from the comms room needs checking before anyone commits to a single cabinet.
  2. University and student accommodationHigh-density wireless where client count per access point is the binding constraint, not coverage. Hundreds of devices in a lecture theatre behave nothing like an office, and a design that ignores capacity will fail on the first busy Monday. Work is planned around the academic calendar with a hard completion date.
  3. Distribution and logisticsSheds along the A1(M) corridor where the diagonal exceeds copper reach and the answer is fibre backbone to satellite cabinets, with wireless validated against loaded racking rather than an empty floor.
  4. Old Hatfield and period stockListed and conservation-area buildings where routes must be agreed, containment selected sympathetically and, where consent is required, the programme planned around it. We will say before quoting if we think the route needs permission.
  5. Schools and further educationWhole-site rewires and wireless refreshes inside the summer window. DBS-checked engineers, safeguarding-aware working, and a completion date that is fixed rather than aspirational.

The mistake we are called in to fix

Coverage designs failing on capacity.

In education and student accommodation, wireless is almost never a coverage problem. It is a capacity problem: too many clients per access point, channel reuse too tight, and a design that surveyed beautifully in an empty building.

We design against client density and application profile first, then validate on the occupied environment. If your current supplier has only ever shown you a coverage heat map, they have shown you half the picture.

Questions we get asked

Straight answers.

Why does our campus Wi-Fi fail when it is busy?

Almost always capacity rather than coverage. Too many clients associated with each access point, channel reuse too tight between adjacent rooms, and a design validated on an empty building. The fix is more access points at lower power with a proper channel plan, and the Cat6A backhaul and PoE budget to support them.

Can you work inside a summer holiday window?

Yes, and it is a substantial part of what we do across Hertfordshire. Whole-site rewires and wireless refreshes are scoped to the six-week window with a fixed completion date, DBS-checked engineers and safeguarding-aware working. Dependencies that could threaten the date are identified in writing at tender stage, not discovered in week four.

Our floorplate is very wide. Is Cat6A enough?

Only if the measured cable route stays within 100 metres, and on a large-floorplate building it frequently does not once you account for the run up, along the containment and back down. We measure the route rather than the plan, and where the answer is a second cabinet with a fibre leg we will price it that way and explain why.

Do you work in listed buildings in Old Hatfield?

Yes. It changes the method rather than the standard: surface containment selected sympathetically, routes agreed with the building owner, and where listed building consent is required, the programme planned around it. We will tell you before quoting if we believe the route you want needs permission.

How quickly can you attend Hatfield?

Around fifteen minutes from SEG House in Chiswell Green. Close enough that reactive attendance is realistic rather than theoretical, which is why we can carry response obligations here rather than only project work.

Do you provide test certificates for every point?

For every link, without exception, whatever the size of the order. Headroom shown per link so a marginal pass cannot hide inside an average, issued as the native tester file alongside a PDF so the results can be reopened in ten years.
