Technical notes

What changed, and what it means for your building.

Short, plain-language notes on the instruments that actually govern network infrastructure — written for the people who have to specify, procure or defend a design, rather than for search engines. No registration, no gated download, no follow-up call unless you ask for one.

Why we publish these

Most cabling specifications in circulation pre-date April 2026 and do not reflect either of the changes below. We would rather you found that out from a page you can read in five minutes than from a variation halfway through a project.

Power over Ethernet is now in the Wiring Regulations

BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 introduced a dedicated Section 716 for Power over Ethernet and new functional earthing provisions for ICT equipment. Bundle sizing, thermal performance, conductor selection and earthing are no longer purely data-side decisions.

What the amendment covers, the five design decisions that are no longer discretionary, and the five questions worth putting to any contractor pricing a PoE installation.

Wi-Fi 7 and the UK 6 GHz band

Ofcom's July 2026 statement opened the upper 6 GHz band to Wi-Fi on a hybrid-sharing basis. It is a genuine gain for dense deployments — and it is already being misrepresented as a reason to install fewer access points.

What was actually decided, why more spectrum does not mean more range, and the three things below the access point that wireless quotations habitually omit.

We will mark it up.

If you hold a cabling specification, performance schedule or framework rate card written before April 2026, it does not reflect either of the changes above. We will review it against the current instrument set and return a marked-up commentary at no charge, with no obligation.*
